Part-Time Evening

The study-unit will be dedicated to the knowledge and skills of social work supervision. The nature of social work supervision will be explored from both a theoretical and applied perspective. Students will be introduced to social work supervision from a functional perspective.

Having explored supervision from a functional perspective, the practice of supervision will be considered as guided by standards of practice, and supervision policies. The relationships that are created by supervisors will be studied as will the various dimensions that must be taken into account when conducting supervision sessions. Input will be given about supervisor styles, how supervisors can apply social work theory through supervision and the techniques to be used in supervision. How adults learn, creativity in supervision, accountability, appraisal and control will also be considered. The use of Group Supervision will be explored.

Study-unit Aims

The aims of this study-unit are:

  • To introduce social work supervision from both a theoretical and applied perspective with a view to helping course participants develop the knowledge, skills and abilities required to carry supervision out in practice;
  • To provide course participants with the opportunity to practice supervision in a controlled setting and to give them feedback about their supervisory practice.

Learning Outcomes: Knowledge and Understanding

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate that they have understood the key concepts that underpin social work supervision;
  • Critically analyse supervisory practice, both their own and that of others.

Learning Outcomes: Skills

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

  • Describe and apply the skills required in effective social work supervision, many of these are core skills for relationship, communication and problemsolving in human relationships therefore participants will already be familiar with them from their professional education and activity;
  • Demonstrate how these skills can be applied in the supervisory context.
